Zaha Hadid Architects’ Beijing Airport Project Unveiled ⇒ The new airport in Daxing, Beijing’s southern district, is designed to become the biggest commercial aviation hub, with seven runways and an annual estimate of 100 million passengers once completed. For the first phase of the airport construction, its first terminal will open doors in October this year and was completely designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.

The first images of the build were released by the Chinese media outlet CGTN, showing the interior of the airport terminal designed by the firm. This terminal was designed to accommodate about 45 million passengers a year, and plans have already been made to expand it to 75 million passengers until 2025.
As we can see by the pictures, the building is composed of a six-pier design located around a large area in the center, which, according to Zaha Hadid Architects,“evolved from principles within traditional Chinese architecture that organises interconnected spaces around a central courtyard”. This design also helps to decrease the distance that passengers need to travel when checking in or changing flights, which would be enormous in such a large airport.
Besides the amazing internal structure of the build, we can also take note of the polished-stone flooring and the white ceilings, whose openings create skylights that allow natural lighting to flood the airport terminal. The firm worked on this project with Buro Happold and the airport specialists ADPI.
Before the construction began, the architects firm revealed 3D designs of what the completed airport would be. It is meant to be an expression of dynamism and connectivity, and for that reason, all the spaces inside the airport are to be column-free and connected between each other, as the flowing roof covers the entire structure.
