Thanks to The Beatles, Liverpool and music are synonymous but the city has a rich and diverse music history that reaches back to the 18th century. Its pop and rock music scene has also been important in the development of a number of other bands and artists since the 1950s. In 2015, Liverpool became a UNESCO City of Music – joining the likes of Seville, Auckland and Kansas City as a city in which creativity is recognised as a vital part of urban development.
