The Colombian-born architect and designer based in the United States first began his adventures as a creator back in the 1970s. Over the years, Montoya has developed numerous outstanding projects, ranging from pied-à-Terre to lodges as well as luxury resorts, art galleries, offices, among countless others. His studio also specializes in carpet and furniture design as well. Throughout this article, one will get to know a bit more about Montoya’s background, style, and some of his most exquisite interior design projects!

Let’s start off by briefly talking about Juan Montaya’s journey. The creator’s road to success began as soon as he started studying architecture in Bogotá and then he moved to New York where he graduated from Parsons School of Design. In 1978, Juan Montoya founded his own design studio that quickly becomes one of the most sought-after practices in the industries of interior design and architecture.

In regards to a signature style, Juan Montoya Design doesn’t necessarily follow a particular style or period but instead blends in various expressions in a single space,  that are characterized as bold yet relaxing. Initially, his work was mostly described as minimalist, but over the course of time, it evolved drastically, resorting to styles such as Art Deco and carefully employing objects that best reflect his interest in different cultures, which allows him to give more personality and quality to an interior.

One can immediately recognize the diverse nature of a Juan Montoya Design-interior by the regular use of exquisite design features such as a juxtaposition of textures, colors, and volumes as well as a remarkable use of shadows, scale, and spatial quality. The end result is interior with an uncanny sense of refinement and elegant simplicity.

Some of the studio’s most notable work includes the restoration of a Greenwich Village apartment building, a series of resorts in the Dominican Republic, the Universal Studios in California, various apartments between New York and Paris, a Beach & Gold Club in Florida, among many other noteworthy projects.

Lastly, Juan Montaya has been honored with a plethora of design distinctions, including becoming a member of the Interior Design Hall of Fame, the Legends Award from Pratt Institute and he has also been heavily featured in Architectural Digest’s prestigious AD100 list of exceptional creatives.
